Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
