The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
