Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
